NDSS Workshop on Security, Privacy, and Trust in Open-Source Ecosystems and Standards

Bringing together researchers, maintainers, standards developers, and practitioners to make the shared technologies we all depend on more resilient.

Why NDSS SafeOSE

Think beyond the repository.

An open-source ecosystem (OSE) is not a single open-source project, repository, or software dependency. It is the broader socio-technical system organized around one or more shared open-source products, standards, protocols, platforms, or connected technical artifacts. An OSE includes those artifacts together with the organizations and governance structures that guide them; the contributors, maintainers, and developers who create them; the users and downstream adopters who depend on them; the development, maintenance, integration, and deployment infrastructure that supports them; and the applications through which they are used.

NDSS SafeOSE therefore studies security at the ecosystem level, with an emphasis on advancing cybersecurity research, developing generalizable security principles and techniques, and translating promising approaches into practical open-source and standards-based mechanisms. Software supply-chain risks are an important part of this problem, but the scope is broader: it also encompasses shared standards and protocols, reference implementations, governance and maintenance processes, contributor and user interactions, ecosystem-wide trust relationships, and real-world deployment. Weaknesses in these common foundations can propagate across organizations, products, applications, and users.

This challenge is visible in standardized IoT and increasingly urgent in open-source AI-agent ecosystems, where independently developed agents communicate, delegate tasks, and access tools through shared protocols and frameworks. These are two prominent examples, not boundaries on the workshop's scope. NDSS SafeOSE encompasses open-source and/or standards-driven ecosystems across AI systems and infrastructure, data systems, software, applications, scientific and engineering processes, and emerging technologies. NDSS SafeOSE aims to build a sustained community around their security, privacy, safety, and trustworthiness, bringing together security, systems, and AI researchers; standards developers; open-source maintainers; industry practitioners; and downstream adopters.

01

Shared foundations

Study standards, protocols, reference implementations, platforms, and infrastructure whose security properties travel downstream.

02

Human ecosystems

Examine maintainers, contributors, users, governance, disclosure, incentives, sustainability, and community processes.

03

Collective resilience

Develop interventions that strengthen whole ecosystems—not only isolated components—across software, IoT, cloud, and AI.

Participate

Two distinct programs

NDSS SafeOSE offers a broad peer-reviewed research-paper program and a hands-on hackathon focused on security and trust in open-source AI agent ecosystems. Hackathon participation is separate from research-paper submission; each program has its own scope, instructions, and deadline.

RESEARCH PAPERS

Call for Papers

Submit regular or short papers to the broad NDSS SafeOSE research program. Papers receive double-blind peer review and accepted work will appear in official workshop proceedings.

NSF connection

Connection to NSF Safe-OSE

NDSS SafeOSE '27 is an independent academic workshop whose development has been informed in part by the U.S. National Science Foundation's Safety, Security, and Privacy of Open-Source Ecosystems (NSF Safe-OSE) program. Activities contributing to the workshop are partially supported through an NSF Safe-OSE award. We gratefully acknowledge NSF's leadership in advancing the security, privacy, safety, and resilience of open-source ecosystems.

Our lineage

From SDIoTSec to NDSS SafeOSE.

NDSS SafeOSE grows directly from SDIoTSec, the NDSS Workshop on Security and Privacy in Standardized IoT, held annually since 2024. SDIoTSec was founded on the insight that vulnerabilities in shared standards and implementations can propagate across entire ecosystems. NDSS SafeOSE expands this perspective to broader open-source infrastructure, software, AI systems, and agent ecosystems.
